Format
The Brazilian Championship - Série A is disputed in a total points league format. The 20 teams play each other team twice, once home and once away, for a total of 38 matchdays. The team with the most points at the end of the season is declared the champion.

Libertadores Cup:
The top four teams at the end of the season not pre-qualified for the  Libertadores Cup earn berths in the 2007 edition. The top three advance directly into the Group Stage while the final qualifying team must play in the Preliminary Round.

South American Cup:
The Brazilian champion plus the top seven teams that did not qualify for the Libertadores Cup earn berths in the 2007 South American Cup. Only the Brazilian champion is allowed to compete in both of the continental tournaments.

Relegation:
The bottom four teams at the end of the season are relegated to Série B.
