4-04-07 - Inter Knocked Out of Gaúcho State Championship

There will be no Gre-Nal in the 2007 Gaúcho State Championship.

With the final playoff spot up for grabs, the defending world champions needed only a tie in their regular season finale against Veranópolis. But a 94th-minute goal by Marcos Alexandre gave the home team a 2-1 win and the postseason berth. Both teams finished with 25 points, but Veranópolis has a +8 goal differential to Inter's -1.

With their elimination from the state championship, Inter will now try to save their season. The Colorados are currently third in their group in the Libertadores Cup with only 4 points in four games. They trail Vélez Sarsfield (8 pts) and Nacional (7 pts), meaning they must win their remaining two games to have any hope of advancing.

On another note, today is 98th anniversary of Inter's founding. Happy birthday, Colorados!
